Trump Secures Permanent Military Foothold in Greenland Deal

On September 19, 2026, President Donald Trump announced a new agreement between the United States and Denmark that will expand and make permanent the U.S. military presence in Greenland.

The agreement aims to enhance U.S. security in Greenland, a strategically important Arctic territory.

Trump emphasized that the U.S. will have full authority to act in Greenland and will develop a substantial military presence while collaborating with Greenlanders.

The signing of the agreement is expected during the upcoming United Nations General Assembly.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stated the agreement will strengthen security for Greenland, Denmark, the U.S., and the Western alliance.

Greenland leader Jens-Frederik Nielsen noted the deal considers Greenland's interests in international cooperation.

The U.S. will maintain a permanent military presence regardless of Greenland's potential independence, while also preventing base establishment by non-NATO countries like China and Russia.

This agreement builds on the existing military rights in Greenland which currently hosts about 150 American troops.

Overall, this deal aims to solidify U.S. military interests in Greenland while keeping the territory under Danish sovereignty, ensuring it remains part of North America's strategic defense.
