A Russian disinformation operation, named Matryoshka, is using fabricated videos featuring Hollywood actors to influence the upcoming midterm elections in the U.S.
The operation promotes a message for voters to reject the Democratic Party and lean towards the Republican side, despite the videos not clearly supporting Republican candidates.
The use of AI allows for easy creation of such content, and the videos feature lesser-known actors, with only Julia Roberts and Sarah Jessica Parker being recognizable names.
These videos are misleadingly branded with CNN logos and encourage sharing, linking to a campaign titled AllDemocratsAreCriminals. However, the reach of this campaign appears minimal, with each video receiving only a few interactions.
Contrary to popular belief, reports suggest that Russia’s goal is not to sway election outcomes, but rather to exploit divisions among far-left and far-right audiences for propaganda purposes.
The media frequently misrepresents the nature of Russian influence efforts, focusing on sensationalism rather than accurate reporting on the true scope of these tactics.
The Matryoshka campaign illustrates how disinformation can be spread through celebrity culture, aiming to manipulate political opinions rather than directly influence election results. This raises questions about media responsibility in reporting on such tactics accurately.
