Inmate Fraudulently Claimed Hurricane Helene Destroyed Home She Never Owned

Peggy Lee Cantrell, a 41-year-old from Marion, North Carolina, was sentenced to three years in federal prison for fraudulently claiming disaster assistance from FEMA after Hurricane Helene. The court found that she made false claims about damages to a non-existent property to receive funds.

1. Fraudulent Claims: Cantrell filed a disaster assistance application with FEMA, falsely stating that her home at 193 Beaver Creek Road was destroyed by Hurricane Helene in September 2024.

2. Misrepresentation of Residency: Initially claiming to rent the property, she later changed her application to indicate ownership, despite never having lived in or owned any structure there.

3. Receiving Funds: Cantrell illegally received $30,631.59 from FEMA based on her fraudulent claims, including a false assertion that she had lived there for 25 years and had lost important documents due to the hurricane.

4. Criminal Charges and Guilt: After a thorough investigation, Cantrell was charged with fraud in October 2025, ultimately pleading guilty. She was already in custody on drug charges when her bond was revoked.

5. Restitution and Future Custody: Alongside her prison sentence, Cantrell is required to pay back the amount she wrongfully received from FEMA. She is set to be transferred to a federal facility.

6. Government's Response: U.S. Attorney Russ Ferguson emphasized the importance of prosecuting fraud against federal programs to ensure resources are allocated to those who genuinely need help during disasters.

Peggy Lee Cantrell's sentencing underlines the government's commitment to tackling fraud, especially in disaster relief situations. The establishment of the National Fraud Enforcement Division by the Department of Justice reflects ongoing efforts to prevent exploitation of federal programs.
