A study by the Progressive Policy Institute (PPI) reveals a significant link between the strength of teachers' unions and student literacy rates across the United States.
The research indicates that states with strong teachers' unions, often liberal, tend to have lower literacy scores among students.
Eight out of ten states with the worst literacy results were identified as having powerful, liberal teachers' unions, while only five were Republican and one a swing state.
Conversely, many top-performing states in literacy were conservative with weaker unions; 13 out of 23 leading states were Republican-dominated.
The PPI’s Director of Education Policy, Rachel Canter, noted that stricter literacy reforms led to improved literacy rankings, particularly in Mississippi, which transformed from low-ranking to seventh in literacy scores from 2013 to 2024.
The study suggests that stronger teachers' unions correlate negatively with the implementation of effective literacy policies.
The findings advocate for revising educational strategies by considering the influence of teachers' unions on literacy initiatives.
