In the competitive Texas Senate race, Republican accusations have emerged against Democrat candidate James Talarico, claiming he was involved in a “pay-to-play scheme” related to his consulting work while serving on a legislative committee.
James Talarico worked for MAYA Consulting (now VIDA Collaborative) from 2019 to 2025 while also being a member of the Texas House Public Education Committee, overseeing education matters.
During this time, VIDA received two contracts totaling about $5.22 million from the Texas Education Agency (TEA) in 2021 and 2022.
Talarico’s financial records disclose he earned over $83,000 from the consulting firm in addition to his legislative salary.
Republican National Committee spokesman Zach Kraft accused Talarico of participating in a “textbook pay-to-play scheme” involving taxpayer funds.
VIDA's CEO Kassi Longoria defended Talarico, stating that he maintained a separation between his consulting and legislative responsibilities and was not directly involved in obtaining contracts.
Talarico’s campaign branded the accusations as false, asserting proper disclosure of his consulting work followed Texas House rules.
These allegations provide Republicans with a strategy to question Talarico's integrity in a closely watched Senate race against Attorney General Ken Paxton, while both Talarico and the firm deny any misconduct.
