A law enforcement initiative called the Memphis Safe Task Force, established by President Donald Trump in September 2025, has achieved significant results in its first year.
1. Child Recovery and Arrests: The task force has found 189 missing children and arrested a total of 12,747 individuals, including 1,408 gang members and others for drug, firearm, homicide, and sex offenses.
2. Crime Reduction: Overall crime rates in Memphis have dropped by nearly 36% with notable decreases in various crime categories, including motor vehicle theft (57% decrease) and murder (36% decrease).
3. Operational Focus: The task force aims to combat street and violent crime through intensive policing and aggressive prosecution.
4. Allegations of Harassment: A group of Memphis residents has filed a lawsuit against task force officials, claiming agents engaged in harassment and intimidation while they were documenting the task force’s activities. The defendants argue that the plaintiffs' actions interfered with law enforcement efforts.
5. Federal Response: Officials counter the lawsuit by stating that interference with law enforcement is not protected under free speech rights.
The Memphis Safe Task Force has reported success in reducing crime and recovering missing children, although it faces legal challenges regarding its treatment of citizens documenting its operations.
