The FBI announced it has stopped an identity fraud scheme involving fake signatures for ballot initiatives in California. A man was arrested for allegedly paying homeless people to sign petitions using stolen identities of registered voters.
A San Bernardino County man, James Brass (47), was arrested and charged with two others, Courtney Price (49) and Jateisha Herron (33).
They allegedly paid individuals on Skid Row in Los Angeles to sign petitions fraudulently.
These actions used stolen identities from a voter database called SIGVALID to create fake signatures on ballot initiatives.
FBI Director Kash Patel emphasized the importance of securing American elections, stating that the FBI would find anyone who interferes with the electoral process.
Undercover investigations have revealed that cash was offered to individuals for signing petitions and registering to vote.
The scheme potentially compromises voter confidence in elections.
The defendants face up to five years in federal prison for each charge, though they are innocent until proven guilty.
