Meta has introduced Muse, a personal AI agent available on WhatsApp and its standalone app, which can perform tasks like sending emails and making purchases for users.
Muse is designed for users aged 18 and older, but is on a messaging app popular with teens.
Meta recently agreed to a $17 billion settlement to improve age checks and safety on Facebook and Instagram, but messaging services are excluded from this agreement.
The settlement specifically states that any products related to direct messaging, such as Muse, do not fall under its terms.
Concerns have been raised by experts regarding user privacy and security when using AI agents, emphasizing that users may unknowingly give control of their online activities to corporations.
Approximately 25% of American teens use WhatsApp, and its popularity is higher in the UK, with around 61% of teens using the app.
Muse is marked as “18+” on the Apple app store, and Meta clearly states it is not intended for teens, except that WhatsApp's minimum age is 13.
While Muse offers convenient functions, it raises questions around privacy and the suitability for younger users.
