Joined by Golden State Warriors basketball superstar Stephen Curry, Obama stressed that life as portrayed by rap or hip-hop videos is not a path toward respectability.
"We live in a culture where our worth is measured by how much money we have and how famous we are," Obama said.
Obama said several things at this high-profile event that folks like me are called bigots for saying, and he presumably did it knowing that he would get publicity for it.
Just to make sure the boys in front of him could identify with him as something other than the onetime president giving a speech he really didn't believe, Obama exposed his own feet of clay in order to help the medicine go down.
Obama said he was "All kinds of screwed up" during his high school days, saying that was partly due to having met his father only once.
Obama just pushed back on that with vigor, and we should all pray that he continues to do so, because if he did, whatever his motivations, it would serve every cause that seeks to preserve a culture worth conserving.
