FBI's Most Wanted: More Applicants for Special Agents

FBI officials say that it takes about 16,000 applicants to get a healthy pool of candidates for the 900 special agent positions that open each year.

"The way that government recruits people is they give you more interesting work, particularly more interesting work at a more youthful point in your career," said Michael German, a former FBI agent who is now a fellow at the Brennan Center for Justice.

As competition for applicants has increased, more employers are offering qualified candidates attractive work opportunities-often at much higher pay levels than starting FBI salaries.

Multiple former agents also said they had been contacted in recent months and encouraged to send any potential recruits to the FBI, amid the dip in applicants.

Nancy Savage, the executive director of the Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI, said she had met with multiple FBI officials including with FBI Director Chris Wray to discuss how to put targeted recruiting efforts "On steroids."

Sixty-seven percent of FBI special agents are white men, according to FBI statistics.

Other FBI ads highlight less-traditional career paths available for FBI applicants, including from CEO to special agent, and from school therapist to special agent.
