The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has charged 16 people across multiple states for alleged illegal voting and election-related crimes. This includes cases where noncitizens are accused of casting ballots in federal elections.
1. Charges and Background
The DOJ announced the charges, highlighting illegal voting by noncitizens in the 2022 and 2024 elections. They warned against attempts to participate illegally in U.S. elections.
Eight defendants charged reside in Texas, while others are from Idaho, Georgia, Massachusetts, Wisconsin, New Jersey, and Michigan.
2. Specific Allegations
Accusations include noncitizens voting and falsely claiming U.S. citizenship to register or vote.
Other charges cover wire fraud, passport and identification fraud, and firearm-related crimes.
Notable cases include:
Santana Coulibaly (New Jersey) voted in two federal elections and submitted a provisional ballot in 2024.
Analiea Milliscent Eccles (Georgia), a Venezuelan national and DACA recipient, is accused of voting nine times from 2008 to 2024.
Avila Gomez (Idaho), a Mexican national, is charged for falsely claiming citizenship to register to vote and voting in recent elections.
Julieta Englestad (Colombian national) and Gladys Adaeze Okafor (Nigerian national) also face similar accusations related to illegal voting.
3. Government's Stance
The DOJ declared that these cases result from a broader enforcement effort started during the Trump administration targeting illegal voting.
Colin M. McDonald, Assistant Attorney General, emphasized that elections should be exclusive to American citizens.
The Department of Homeland Security is involved in a larger investigation with over 1,620 open cases and 151 arrests connected to election fraud.
4. Further Investigations
The DHS is examining more than 300,000 suspected cases of illegal voting as the number of investigations grows.
Secretary Markwayne Mullin underlined the seriousness of the findings, stating that every illegal vote cancels out a valid citizen vote.
