DATA: 60% Oppose Increase to H-1B Visas.

A majority of Americans do not support increasing H-1B visas, which allow immigrants to potentially lower American wages, especially in the tech industry. A survey by Rasmussen Reports found that 60 percent believe there are enough skilled workers in the U. S. for white-collar jobs. This raises doubts about proposals in Congress to boost the number of H-1B visas, with only 26 percent in favor of increasing foreign workers.

The survey showed wide opposition, with 72 percent of Republicans, 63 percent of swing voters, and 47 percent of Democrats believing there is enough talent available domestically. The discussion on H-1B visas has gained attention after President-elect Donald J. Trump supported his advisers Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy in seeking to attract foreign talent. Trump previously claimed H-1B visas are unfair to American workers, stating in 2016 that he used them, although he believed they should not exist. Musk has been a strong supporter of these visas, with reports indicating that his company Tesla laid off thousands of American workers in favor of H-1B migrants.
