Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is reportedly planning another power move within the Democratic Party after her involvement in the ousting of President Joe Biden. According to a report by the New York Times, Pelosi is working to replace Rep. Jerry Nadler as the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee. She is encouraging Rep. Jamie Raskin to challenge Nadler, who has not yet made a public announcement about his potential candidacy. However, the close friendship between Nadler and Raskin poses a challenge to this plan.
Raskin is known for being a loyal Democrat, having been associated with several controversial matters, including unfounded claims about Russian interference during Donald Trump's presidency. He has also expressed intentions to not certify a potential Trump victory in the 2024 elections. Pelosi seems concerned that the current Democratic leadership might not be capable of effectively confronting Trump and his supporters in Congress.
Currently, Nadler is actively campaigning to retain his position, highlighting his role in the impeachments of Trump. He is seen as dedicated to his job, and Raskin is noted for his skills in spontaneous debates, which could add to the competition. Democratic leaders are remaining neutral for the moment regarding this internal tussle.
Additionally, with Jim Jordan, the current chair of the House Judiciary Committee, being a Trump ally, any Democratic initiatives to obstruct investigations will have to navigate through his committee. Older representatives like Raúl Grijalva and David Scott are also facing opposition from younger candidates looking to take their places.
In Jonathan Alter’s book, it is stated that Pelosi was frustrated by the outcome of Biden's withdrawal from the race, believing she bore the blame for it. This time around, she is reportedly approaching the effort to replace Nadler with more caution.
