Two sitting members of Congress, both from California, are at the center of a major controversy.
Nanette Barragan and Jimmy Gomez are accused and celebrated for going to the U.S.-Mexico border and literally helping more than a dozen illegal immigrants enter the country.
Customs and Border Protection officers on Tuesday morning took in the final members of a group of asylum seekers who, accompanied by attorneys and two members of Congress, sat on U.S. soil outside the Otay Mesa Port of Entry for hours, some overnight.
Volunteers, mostly attorneys and law students, shielded the migrants to keep them from being forced back into Mexico while the two members of Congress questioned officials about whether they would take the group into the port for processing.
"You shouldn't have to have members of Congress here to observe what's happening at ports of entry for CBP to take in people who are on U.S. soil and have presented themselves for asylum."
Now, not only are members of Congress able to exempt themselves from the laws they pass, but they are perfectly free to make sure no one else has to follow those laws as well.
If you know a member of Congress, or just happen to be committing a crime with a member of Congress around, you can now avoid any punishment for your crime if they decide they want to join you in perpetrating that crime.
