California has introduced a rebate program for electric trucks, offering up to $120,000 in incentives, with over $1 billion allocated until 2030. Despite claims that the program is not funded by consumers, it relies on California's low-carbon fuel standard, which ultimately increases fuel costs for drivers.
The “carbon intensity” score evaluates fuel based on its greenhouse gas emissions throughout its lifecycle, leading refiners to incur deficits for traditional fuels.
Refiners must buy credits from cleaner energy producers, passing these costs onto consumers at the gas pump, which acts as a hidden gas tax to fund electric vehicle subsidies.
Upcoming regulations require significant reductions in carbon intensity, which could raise gas prices by an estimated 47 cents per gallon by 2025 and up to $1.50 by 2035.
Other states, including Oregon and Washington, have adopted similar programs that also impact out-of-state fuel sources, imposing financial burdens on drivers outside California.
The environmental impact of these programs is minor, contributing only a negligible fraction to global emissions reductions.
The Clean Air Act provides a potential mechanism for pushing back against these policies if deemed unnecessary by the EPA.
Drivers across multiple states face increased fuel costs without significant environmental benefits, as financial penalties and regulations do not directly address critical air quality issues. Calls are being made for the EPA to reassess these initiatives to relieve consumers from these burdens.
