Congressional Democratic leaders sue Trump admin over voter rolls ahead of 2026 midterms

Democratic congressional leaders are taking legal action against the Trump administration, alleging unlawful practices regarding voter rolls ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries have filed a lawsuit in Washington, D.C.

The lawsuit claims the administration is trying to intimidate election officials and unlawfully remove suspected noncitizens from state voter lists.

Schumer stated, "[Trump] knows he can’t win a fair fight, so he's resorted to bullying election officials into stripping Americans of their right to vote."

The complaint alleges that the Department of Homeland Security has pressured states to review questionable lists of suspected noncitizens and threatened officials to ensure compliance.

It also mentions President Trump’s alleged recent threats to imprison California election officials if they counted ballots from suspected noncitizens.

The lawsuit argues that the Executive Branch does not have the authority to control state voter list maintenance or influence state decisions about voter eligibility.

In response, the Justice Department maintains that their actions to protect elections are lawful and necessary for ensuring eligible citizens can vote.

Democratic leaders are actively challenging the Trump administration's tactics regarding voter rolls, emphasizing the importance of protecting voting rights and maintaining trust in the electoral process.
