The Islamic Supreme Council of Canada is sending a delegation to the Vatican to meet with Pope Leo XIV. Led by Prof. Imam Syed Badiuddin Soharwardy, the goal of the visit is to strengthen interfaith relationships between Muslims and Christians.
Purpose of the Visit: The delegation aims to promote peaceful coexistence and dialogue among different religions. Prof. Soharwardy emphasizes that despite differing beliefs, people can work together and understand each other.
Background: This is not the first time Soharwardy has engaged with the Vatican; he previously met with Pope Francis in 2017 along with a delegation from the Progressive Muslim Association. The intention back then was to demonstrate common humanity and the importance of interfaith dialogue.
Delegation Size and Representation: The current delegation consists of 22 representatives from various parts of Canada. The group will meet with Catholic leaders to foster better relationships between the two faiths.
Educational Aspect: The delegation will visit an Islamic university run by the Catholic Church in Rome. Soharwardy highlights the importance of education in improving understanding and reducing misconceptions about Islam.
Funding for the Trip: All expenses for the trip are covered privately by the participants.
Addressing Islamophobia: Soharwardy believes that discussing and educating others about Islam can help combat Islamophobia and dismantle negative stereotypes. He has a long history of engaging with different communities to foster tolerance and understanding.
Personal and Community Responsibility: Soharwardy feels it is important for Muslims to explain their faith and responsibilities as Canadian citizens. He stresses the need for unity and cooperation among different religious groups in facing societal challenges.
The visit to the Vatican by the Islamic Supreme Council of Canada illustrates the ongoing effort to build bridges between different faith communities. Prof. Imam Syed Badiuddin Soharwardy hopes this interaction will enhance interfaith dialogue and promote peaceful coexistence in Canada.
