Indiana AG: Illegal Alien Voted In 4 Federal Elections

Authorities have charged Francisco Aguilar Romero, an illegal immigrant and DACA recipient, with illegally registering to vote and casting ballots in several elections. This comes amid discussions regarding the enforcement of voting laws and allegations that noncitizen voting is infrequent.

Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita and Vigo County Prosecutor Terry Modesitt announced the charges against Romero for false voter registration, perjury, and voting while ineligible.

Romero registered to vote in Indiana in 2018, claiming he was unaware of his ineligibility. He filled out a form that included a declaration of citizenship, which he checked as "YES" but now alleges he did not complete.

Despite his claims of not filling out the information himself, the forms indicate they were generated electronically, not handwritten. DMV workers deny providing information about voting eligibility to Romero.

Romero successfully voted in the 2018, 2020, 2022, and 2024 elections, as well as various local elections.

Current federal law does not require proof of citizenship to register, although some lawmakers are pushing for changes to require such proof.

The Department of Homeland Security reported that over 250,000 noncitizens are illegally registered to vote in four states: California, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Nevada.

The charges against Romero highlight ongoing debates about voter registration laws and the issue of noncitizen voting in the United States, amid legislative efforts to tighten voting regulations.
