Canada Frees ‘Deradicalized’ Al Qaeda Terrorist in Parliament Bomb Plot

The history of surveillance on potential terrorists in Canada, particularly focusing on the activities of individuals linked to Al Qaeda and recent developments concerning one of the key conspirators in a thwarted terror plot.

The Salaheddin Islamic Centre in Toronto was under surveillance for years due to its connections with extremism and fundraising for jihad.

Fahim Ahmad, a 21-year-old involved in distributing jihad videos, was a key suspect in a group plotting attacks.

Another member, Zakaria Amara, expressed frustration over the slow progress of their plans and researched bomb-making.

The group aimed to attack several targets in Toronto and considered extreme actions such as storming Canada’s parliament and beheading officials if Muslim prisoners were not released.

Law enforcement and intelligence agencies monitored the situation closely, leading to arrests before the group could execute its plans.

Recent Developments

Zakaria Amara, one of the ring leaders of the Toronto 18 terror plot, has been granted full parole after the Parole Board concluded he has shed extremist beliefs and demonstrated positive behavior during his incarceration.

Amara had been on day parole for four years under specific conditions and is now planning to reintegrate into society by living independently, maintaining employment, attending mosque, and engaging in family activities.

Amara’s release has raised concerns about the local mosque's response to his presence, reflecting ongoing discussions about security and the management of former extremists in society. Authorities continue to monitor connections among terror suspects domestically and internationally.
