CCP Hosted Yale Student-Group Leader at Beijing Propaganda Training

A Yale student-group leader, Sun Xinglun, has been linked to a program organized by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) aimed at training overseas student leaders to promote Beijing’s messaging on foreign campuses. This investigation highlights the connections between Yale and a Beijing-based initiative, raising concerns about the implications for national security.

CCP Training Program: The program, run by the Western Returned Scholars Association, included almost 100 representatives from student associations across 20 countries. It focused on propagating the CCP's narrative through personal social media.

Role of Sun Xinglun: Sun Xinglun, identified as the vice president of the Association of Chinese Students and Scholars at Yale, participated in the program. His role involved discussing topics that could influence foreign perceptions of China, linking everyday experiences to broader narratives.

Prizes for Propaganda: Participants were encouraged to create content for social media about China, with prizes offered for the best posts, emphasizing the program’s goal to spread CCP ideology.

Connections to Military Recruitment: The Western Returned Scholars Association has ties to recruiting for military research, raising concerns about the potential for espionage and intelligence collection.

Questions for Yale: Significant questions remain regarding who financed Sun's participation, whether it was disclosed to the university, and if any follow-up activities were planned by the association.

The involvement of a Yale student leader in a program aimed at spreading Chinese propaganda highlights potential risks for U.S. national security. The situation calls for scrutiny regarding the activities and affiliations of student organizations linked to foreign governments.
