In the lead-up to the 2020 presidential election, over 633,000 voter records were illegally taken from Maricopa County, as revealed by recent White House documents. The compromised files included personal details of voters, and 930 records pertained to individuals with protected status, such as domestic violence victims and law enforcement officers.
The FBI identified a suspect who claimed to have exploited a website vulnerability while trying to register to vote. He admitted downloading between one and two million records but stated he did not intend to sell them. The suspect destroyed the files before the FBI raid in November 2020 and expressed remorse for his actions.
Despite the confession, Arizona prosecutors chose not to file charges. There is no evidence that the stolen data was used to alter votes, highlighting a significant flaw in the county's election security.
