New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani's administration has renewed a contract allowing hotels across the city to provide emergency shelter for homeless individuals and families, with a value up to $1.86 billion, lasting until 2029. This three-year agreement with the Hotel Association of New York City Foundation allows hotel rooms to be used as emergency shelters to meet the city’s legal requirement to house those seeking assistance.
The Department of Homeless Services (DHS) stated that the use of commercial hotels has been essential during various crises, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the recent influx of migrants. As of July 31, 2023, over 82,000 individuals were staying in city shelters.
While the contract has sparked criticism for affecting hotel availability and prices, advocates for the homeless recognize its necessity due to ongoing challenges in the shelter and affordable housing sectors. Additionally, DHS has awarded over $87 million for support services to help those residing in these hotel shelters.
