Trump signs 2 new EOs to restrict birthright citizenship and curb ‘birth tourism’

President Donald Trump signed two executive orders aimed at restricting birthright citizenship and addressing "birth tourism." This follows a recent Supreme Court ruling that annulled a broader immigration directive.

Trump criticized the Supreme Court's decision on birthright citizenship as "unfortunate" and stated his administration would adjust its approach.

The first executive order targets children born to parents with connections to foreign embassies or those accused of fraud for securing U.S. citizenship.

The second executive order focuses on "birth tourism," tightening visa rules and border checks for pregnant foreign nationals visiting the U.S.

These measures seek to reinterpret the Fourteenth Amendment's jurisdiction clause, anticipating legal challenges from activists and state attorneys general.

The Fourteenth Amendment was originally established to secure citizenship for newly freed Black Americans after the Civil War, overturning previous Supreme Court rulings that denied them citizenship.

The new executive orders reflect Trump's strategy to combat what he views as abuses of birthright citizenship while potentially facing judicial challenges.
