Fauci’s COVID Phone Turned Over To Senate Panel Ahead Of Contempt Vote

A Senate panel is investigating Dr. Anthony Fauci, the former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and has acquired records from his cellphone used during the COVID-19 pandemic. The outcome of a key committee vote may lead to holding Fauci in contempt of Congress.

The Department of Health and Human Services has provided the Senate Homeland Security Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations with records from Fauci's cellphone.

Senators Ron Johnson and Rand Paul have also obtained numerous additional documents related to Fauci.

Chairman Rand Paul stated that if the committee votes to hold Fauci in contempt, he plans to send the case to the Department of Justice for potential prosecution.

Paul emphasized that his committee’s referral would mark the first of its kind and hinted at discussions with Senate Majority Leader John Thune regarding securing votes for a full Senate vote.

A Senate floor vote would necessitate cooperation from Democrats, as it requires 60 votes to pass. Thune previously criticized Fauci's responses as inadequate.

Paul is preparing to argue that Fauci cannot invoke the Fifth Amendment due to President Biden’s pardon, which he claims removes the risk of self-incrimination.

Contempt of Congress can result in criminal penalties, including fines and imprisonment.

The investigation into Dr. Fauci is significant, as it may establish precedents concerning the accountability of government officials and the impact of presidential pardons on congressional testimonies.
