While Trump was frequently “fact checked” and cut off by Muir and Davis, Harris was allowed to lie freely without any pushback. The hosts refused to press her on past support for a ban on fracking, healthcare for illegal aliens and other far-left claims, and refused to fact check Harris when she falsely claimed that Trump called Neo-Nazis “very fine people” after the Charlottesville rally. The false claim has been repeatedly debunked by major fact-checking outlets, though Harris was allowed to utter the false claim without pushback.
Financial markets early Wednesday were moving in a way consistent with a reduced likelihood of a second Donald Trump presidency. Though a key inflation report was looming, cross-asset movements suggested who traders believed had won. U.S. stock futures were modestly lower. The dollar fell vs. major rivals, particularly the Japanese yen Bitcoin slumped by 2%. Trump Media and Technology which tends to move in line with the likelihood of Trump winning the presidency, skidded 15% in premarket trade.
The biggest loser in the first (and likely only) presidential debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Trump was ABC News, which hosted the faceoff. The moderators, David Muir and Linsey Davis, embarrassed themselves and their network by, among other things, fact-checking Trump in real time on more than one occasion – sometimes incorrectly – while allowing Harris to spout serial lies and distortions. Social media blew up early on in the debate with commentators on the right, in particular, calling Tuesday night’s faceoff the worst and most one-sided debate in history.
Democrats are voicing frustrations at polling that shows more voters see former President Trump as the moderate candidate in the presidential race against Vice President Harris. Democrats for years have cast Trump as an extremist who is a threat to democracy. But a poll released by The New York Times and Siena College found more voters see Harris as too liberal than see Trump as too conservative.
