Sanders May Be Surging, But Is Socialism?

Are voters in the most prosperous country in the world really going to endorse the economic revolution promised by Sen. Bernie Sanders ? Vermont's most famous Marxist has been rising in polls of Democratic voters participating in tonight's Iowa Caucus and next week's New Hampshire primary.

Even within the Democratic party, a new NBC/Wall Street Journal poll finds that most voters aren't backing socialism.

Rahm Emanuel, a senior adviser to President Clinton and chief of staff to Barack Obama, has been trying to talk Democratic voters away from the Sanders cliff and toward the relatively more moderate path of recent Democratic presidents.

Sen. Bernie Sanders and his supporters don't believe Democrats need to account for the more-moderate sensibilities of these suburban and exurban voters.

Former Secretary of State John Kerry - one of Joe Biden's highest-profile endorsers - was overheard Sunday on the phone at a Des Moines hotel explaining what he would have to do to enter the presidential race amid "The possibility of Bernie Sanders taking down the Democratic Party - down whole." Sitting in the lobby restaurant of the Renaissance Savery hotel, Kerry was overheard by an NBC News analyst saying "Maybe I'm f--ing deluding myself here" and explaining that to run, he'd have to step down from the board of Bank of America and give up his ability to make paid speeches.

Therefore even if Mr. Sanders wins in Iowa, he will fortunately face a difficult path in persuading voters to surrender so much more of their money and autonomy to Washington.

As for the recent Sanders surge, according to the RealClearPolitics average of polls in Iowa and nationwide, Sen. Sanders is finally back to the roughly 24% support among Democrats he enjoyed in late March of 2019.
