Let the Trans-Atlantic Trading Begin

With Brexit done, the U.K. and U.S. have an opportunity to create a model bilateral trade agreement, and with it revitalize their special relationship.

The president tweeted in December that Mr. Johnson's election created the possibility of a "Massive new trade deal," and the prime minister's office released a statement days later saying the two leaders hoped to strike an "Ambitious free trade agreement."

If the U.K. is willing to exclude vendors that can't meet that standard of independence, then the U.S. should make clear we will proceed quickly on planning a bilateral trade agreement.

It also could become a new gold standard for trade agreements, attracting other like-minded nations to a new trading bloc focused on mutual prosperity and shared values.

As with previous trade agreements, tariff reductions could be phased in over a number of years in sensitive areas, but the goal should be to remove them completely in less than a decade.

Establish a "Rules of origin regime" for all trade agreements.

Putting an arbitrary end to the agreement would create uncertainty and deter trade and investment.
