Pelosi Embraces Legislation To Effectively Prevent Future Government Shutdowns

In a briefing with reporters and columnists on Friday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi became the highest official yet to formally embrace legislation that would effectively prevent the government from closing.

In the wake of the just-completed shutdown over border wall funding, top Republicans have joined the chorus seeking to pass legislation that would prevent shutdowns from ever happening.

Senator Chuck Grassley, the president pro tempore of the Senate, put out a statement on Friday that included this conspicuous request about the government funding bill that Congress now must reach in three weeks, when the current deal expires: "The final package should also end government shutdowns once and for all."

In the halls of Congress following the announcement of a resolution to the current standoff, longtime Sen. Lamar Alexander, who is retiring from office, said "That government shutdowns should be in budget negotiations what chemical weapons are to real warfare. completely off limits."

That so many veteran lawmakers feel so strongly about prohibiting government shutdowns speaks, in part, to the growing harm those shutdowns are inflicting.

As with much in federal politics today, while lawmakers broadly agee on the concept that government shutdowns should never be allowed to happen, they disagree about the means of getting there.

Senator Rob Portman, along with numerous Senate Republicans, has introduced the End Government Shutdowns Act, under which current spending levels would simply continue if no agreement was reached on new government funding legislation.

Shutdown Deal Reportedly Reached: Trump Announcement Set For 1pm
At long last, the government shutdown, now in its 35th day, may finally be coming to an end.

According to the Drudge Report, President Trump is planning to announce that a deal has been reached to temporarily reopen the federal government during a hastily organized 1 pm press conference.

The press conference was announced mere minutes before Drudge broke the news about the announcement, and follows a hint from Sen. Tim Kaine from earlier on Friday that a breakthrough might finally be imminent.

Reports on Twitter stressed that the government would reopen "Temporarily".

The agreement comes after La Guardia Airport in NYC temporarily suspended flights and 800,000 government workers missed their second paycheck.
