Lawman, Gambler, and the Myth That Outgrew the Man
Few figures in American history have been as thoroughly mythologized as Wyatt Berry Stapp Earp. Hollywood gave us the square jawed, morally unambiguous hero, a man who walked into the O.K. Corral and walked out a legend. But the flesh and blood Earp was something messier and far more interesting: a man who drifted between the badge and the gambling table, who enforced the law when it suited him and bent it when it didn’t, and whose greatest talent may have been surviving long enough to tell his own story.
