DOJ unseals expanded indictment in Iran-sponsored hacking campaign

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has filed new charges against 17 individuals linked to the Iranian company Mabna Institute. This organization is accused of conducting hacking and data theft against various U.S. targets.

The DOJ's statement reveals that the individuals were working with the Mabna Institute, which carried out hacking activities on behalf of the Iranian government and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

Between 2013 and 2017, the Mabna Institute targeted many U.S. and international universities, corporations, and government entities.

Over 100,000 accounts were targeted, with about 8,000 faculty emails compromised across 322 universities, including 144 in the U.S.

A reward of $10 million has been offered for information leading to the arrests of key suspects.

Assistant Attorney General John A. Eisenberg stated that the hackers stole at least 31 terabytes of valuable information and intellectual property.

U.S. Attorney Jamie McDonald noted the ongoing commitment to combat foreign cyber threats, highlighting their implications for both national security and economic stability.

The charges underscore a persistent effort to protect U.S. interests against cyber espionage, emphasizing the importance of cybersecurity in safeguarding sensitive information.
