Europe’s Coming Existential Crisis

Kenneth R. Timmerman discusses the various challenges facing Europe and the European Union (EU). He highlights significant issues, including migration, EU enlargement, and concerns about democracy within the union.

1. Migration Issues:

A recent surge of 72,000 North African migrants at Ceuta, a Spanish enclave, has led to heightened tensions in Europe.

Italy's Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, and Denmark's Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, condemned uncontrolled migration, emphasizing the need for migrants to respect European values.

This migration crisis stems from previous EU policies, particularly those following the 2015 refugee influx.

2. EU Enlargement:

Montenegro and Albania, alongside potential talks with Iceland, are prospective candidates for EU membership.

The accession of predominantly Muslim Albania raises concerns, especially regarding future membership talks with Ukraine and Serbia, given geopolitical tensions with Russia.

3. Democratic Deficits:

Citizens across Europe are frustrated with regulations imposed by the EU, often created by unelected officials.

The EU’s response to the wolf population in agriculture exemplifies how policies can clash with local livelihoods, leading to underground resistance among farmers.

There are discussions over the power of the European Commission, particularly under President Ursula von der Leyen, to make foreign policy decisions without unanimous member state approval, which critics view as anti-democratic.

4. Concerns of Authoritarianism:

The growing centralization of EU power could undermine national identities and cultural heritage.

Warnings from former leaders emphasize the risks of a lack of political opposition within the EU, drawing parallels to historical authoritarian regimes.

Europe stands at a critical juncture, facing the possibility of becoming more authoritarian and centralized, or potentially returning to its roots and honoring its historical cultures. Timmerman expresses skepticism about the likelihood of a democratic resurgence in the immediate future, citing ongoing challenges and tensions over migration, governance, and national identity within the EU.
