Scandal-Plagued Cory Mills Loses Reelection Bid To Primary Challenger

Former local news anchor Ryan Elijah won the Republican primary against incumbent Florida Representative Cory Mills on August 18, 2026. Mills' reelection bid was marred by controversies and investigations that ultimately led to his loss.

Election Results: Ryan Elijah received 46.9% of the votes while Cory Mills garnered 34.4%. Other candidates, Sarah Ulrich and Michael Johnson, also participated in the primary.

Controversies Surrounding Mills:

Mills faced investigations by the House Ethics Committee and the Department of Justice (DOJ) for allegations of sexual misconduct and campaign finance violations.

In October 2025, a restraining order was granted against Mills concerning an ex-girlfriend. Another woman accused him of assault in February 2025 but later withdrew the allegation.

Lack of Political Support:

Notably absent from Trump’s endorsements this election cycle, Mills' political standing weakened as previous endorsements had been crucial to other candidates’ successes.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis explicitly stated that he did not support Mills.

Endorsements for Elijah: Important Republican figures such as Anna Paulina Luna and Mike Haridopolos endorsed Elijah, framing him as a capable leader who would represent the community's values.

Luna emphasized Elijah's commitment to the Constitution, fiscal responsibility, and veteran support.

Campaign Issues: Elijah focused his campaign on reducing living costs, supporting religious freedom, law enforcement, and immigration law enforcement. He also supported the Safeguard America Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act.

Mills' Campaign Challenges:

Mills struggled to raise funds during his campaign. He promoted his past endorsement by Trump, boasting about his conservative voting record.

The political environment in the district appeared favorable for Democrats, who viewed Mills' seat as a potential opportunity in the upcoming general election.

Cory Mills' failure to secure his seat in Congress stems from his involvement in multiple controversies, lack of endorsements from key political figures, and financial struggles during his campaign. Ryan Elijah's victory may reflect changing sentiments among Republican voters in Florida's 7th Congressional District, setting the stage for a competitive race in November.
