I'm Sorry, The Feds Wasted HOW MANY TRILLIONS in Improper Payments?

A report from the Government Accountability Office (GAO) reveals that from 2003 to 2023, the U.S. government wasted approximately $2.7 trillion on improper payments. This figure refers to payments made in error or without adequate documentation, raising concerns about financial accountability in federal spending.

The estimated $2.7 trillion lost over 20 years is nearly double the yearly combined costs of Medicare/Medicaid, triple the defense budget, and almost equates to the previous year's tax revenue.

This waste mirrors the findings of a Cicero Institute report titled “Rebuilding Public Trust by Ensuring Accountability in Government Spending.”

The problem of improper payments has worsened over time, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic (2020-2021).

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent noted that up to 10% of the federal budget could be lost to fraud, estimating annual losses between $233 billion and $521 billion.

When adjusted for inflation, the total improper payments could be as high as $3.9 trillion by 2026, surpassing the overall federal budget for several years.

This significant spending inefficiency emphasizes a broader issue: voters often support high spending but do not effectively address accountability in government.

The staggering amount of $2.7 trillion lost to improper payments raises serious questions about government accountability. While concerns about fraud are valid, the bigger issue lies in the public's demand for increased spending and the unwillingness of politicians to rein in expenditure. Addressing these systemic issues remains crucial for fiscal responsibility.
