Usual GOP suspects join with Dems to block Trump admin’s efforts to scrap Dept. of Education

Recent efforts by the Trump administration to eliminate the Department of Education have faced significant challenges due to bipartisan support in the Senate.

The Senate HELP Committee voted to advance a bill that prevents the transfer of special education offices to other federal entities.

Senators Tim Kaine, Susan Collins, and Lisa Murkowski support this bill, emphasizing the importance of keeping education programs at the Department of Education.

Collins stated, “This bill is straightforward,” underscoring the need to maintain programs where Congress intended them to be.

Murkowski highlighted the need to focus on all children, including those with special needs.

The Trump administration has been attempting to implement agreements with other federal departments to administer educational programs without congressional approval.

Education Secretary Linda McMahon described these agreements as “proofs of concept,” but Education Department press secretary Savannah Newhouse criticized the Senate’s actions as “sabotage” of these efforts.

The bipartisan bill represents a significant obstacle to the Trump administration's plans regarding the Department of Education and aims to safeguard critical educational services for students nationwide.
