DOJ Charges ‘Charity’ Director With Providing Support to Hamas

The U. S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has charged Mohammad Yousef Hasna, also known as "Orhan Korkmaz" and "Abu al-Baraa," for running a fake charity in Turkey that provided support to Hamas, a designated terrorist organization.

Charges Filed: Hasna faces a three-count complaint for using a humanitarian organization as a front to deliver money and supplies to Hamas leaders in Gaza. The charges include conspiring to provide material support to Hamas, financing terrorism, and conspiring to finance terrorism, each potentially leading to a 20-year prison sentence.

Hamas Involvement: The charity reportedly received around $81.56 million in fiscal year 2024, nearly double its income from the previous year.It claimed to spend approximately $91 million on charitable activities in the same period.

Coordination with Hamas: Hasna coordinated with Ghazi Hamad, a key Hamas leader, to manage the delivery of so-called humanitarian aid, which was actually intended to support terrorist activities. He controlled cash deliveries, procurement of supplies, and logistics for transporting goods into Gaza.

Fake Operations: The operation involved staged deliveries, fraudulent reports, and misrepresentation of the charity's activities to disguise funding for terrorism.

The DOJ is committed to disrupting Hamas's operations and exposing financing channels that support its activities, underscoring the significance of prosecuting individuals like Hasna who exploit charities for terrorism.
