Following the police shooting of Corey Ruiz on July 22, 2023, protesters in downtown Madison, Wisconsin, created an area called the “Corey Ruiz Autonomous Zone” (CRAZ). Ruiz, an armed felon, was shot after allegedly attacking a police officer. Protesters built barricades and set up tents, resembling previous protest zones like Seattle’s CHOP/CHAZ.
The City of Madison has supported the zone by providing portable restrooms and services. However, this has led to a rise in homelessness in the area, causing disruptions. Independent journalist Nick Sortor reported being threatened by protesters while attempting to leave, highlighting challenges for reporters in such environments. Hundreds have participated in BLM marches in attempts to reignite police reform discussions.
