Georgia Voter-Access Law: Setting Record Straight

Georgia remains a national leader in voting access and election security.

In a fundraising email sent soon after SB 202 - Georgia's new voter-access law - was passed, he falsely accused Georgia Republicans of waging "a massive and unabashed assault on voting rights" by "Ending no-excuse mail voting" and "Restricting early voting on weekends." I realize that Senator Warnock is a new lawmaker, but he should at least read the bill in question before tossing out completely false claims.

SB 202 leaves no-excuse absentee voting in place and expands early voting in Georgia by mandating an additional day of weekend voting in all Georgia counties.

Not to be outdone, President Biden alleged that SB 202's new photo-ID-number requirement for absentee ballots "Will effectively deny the right to vote to countless voters." He should tell that to the majority of Georgia voters, Georgia Democrats, and black voters in Georgia who supported the commonsense effort.

Automatically registering eligible voters through the Georgia Department of Driver Services, which confirms citizenship prior to registration, makes it easier for eligible voters to vote, and ensures that election officials have accurate, up-to-date information.

Stacey Abrams is pushing for just 15 days of early voting, below the 16 days Georgia has offered its voters for years.

The legislation moves Georgia from the subjective signature-match identity-verification process for absentee-ballot voting to objective ID numbers from photo IDs, free voter IDs, or other documents.

DOJ Suing Georgia Over New Voting Rights Law: Report

The Justice Department will file a lawsuit against the state of Georgia on Friday to try and overturn a new voting law that Democrats allege discriminates against minorities, the Washington Post reported.

The action is the first major voting rights case the DOJ has filed under the Biden administration.

Republican-led state governments across the country have been seeking to impose broad new voting laws in the wake of the 2020 election.

Former President Donald Trump and allies have said voter fraud led to President Joe Biden's victory.

The Post said Georgia's law imposes new limits on the use of absentee ballots, makes it a crime for outside groups to provide food and water to voters waiting at polling stations, and hands greater control over election administration to the state legislature.

"To meet the challenge of the current moment, we must re-dedicate the resources of the Department of Justice to a critical part of its original mission: enforcing federal law to protect the franchise for all eligible voters," Garland said earlier this month, USA Today reported.

Among highlights, the law requires a photo ID in order to vote absentee by mail, after more than 1.3 million Georgia voters used that option during the COVID-19 pandemic.
