Judge Blocks Trump Administration's Push for Swifter Immigrant Deportations

A federal district judge blocked the Trump administration from expanding a policy allowing the government to quickly deport illegal immigrants without going through immigration courts.

In July, the Trump administration moved to expand the application of the policy to the entire country and to any immigrant who entered the U.S. illegally in the previous two years.

Late on Friday, U.S. District Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson took issue with the process the administration used to expand the policy.

The White House said Saturday that the administration has sought to enforce immigration law passed by Congress since Mr. Trump took office, adding, "And for two and a half years, misguided lower court decisions have been preventing those laws from ever being enforced-at immense cost to the whole country."

Judge Jackson's ruling in the district court for the District of Columbia is the latest in a string of immigration actions the Trump administration has attempted to carry out, only to be halted by federal courts.

A federal court in Los Angeles also on Friday blocked the administration from implementing one of its most desired changes, to do away with a limit on detaining immigrant families for longer than 20 days.

As more judges appointed by Mr. Trump take seats on federal courts, several major immigration policies have been allowed to take effect.
