Hong Kong police fire tear gas to break up mass protests ahead of China's National Day

Hong Kong riot police fired tear gas on Sunday during clashes between demonstrators and officers ahead of the 70th annual National Day celebration marking the founding of the People's Republic of China, according to The Associated Press.

Police also deployed a blue liquid used to identify protesters who threw Molotov cocktails at police, according to the AP. ADVERTISEMENT. The protests originally began at the beginning of the summer in response to a bill that would have allowed the city to extradite some criminal suspects to China, but have continued since the measure was formally withdrawn.

Demonstrators are now calling for Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam's resignation and an independent probe into police brutality and are concerned about erosion of autonomy from Beijing.

Despite a police ban, another protest march is planned for Tuesday, when National Day will be observed.

The Hong Kong government has scaled back the celebration already, cancelling a fireworks display and moving parts of the celebration indoors.

Thousands of people also marched in support of the Hong Kong demonstrators in Taiwan, according to the AP, which considers itself independent although Beijing considers it Chinese territory.

"I hope Taiwanese can send a signal that we won't become the next Hong Kong," protester Lin Shu-Lian said, lamenting police crackdowns on the Hong Kong protests.
