Sen. Mazie Hirono on Tuesday said the Democrats could keep Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh's Supreme Court seat vacant for two years if his nomination falls apart and the "Blue wave" flips the Senate in November.
"I think we've had those kinds of vacancies before," Hirono told Politico Magazine, noting that a Supreme Court seat remained vacant for a year when Senate Republicans declined to consider Merrick Garland 's nomination in 2016.
"So the world does not come to an end because we don't fill all of the nominees," Hirono added.
California professor Christine Blasley Ford on Sunday publicly accused Kavanaugh of sexually assaulting her when the two were students at neighboring D.C.-area high schools in the 1980s.
Hirono said the new allegation "Somewhat stretches credulity, let's put it that way."
During the hearing, Hirono asked Kavanaugh if he had ever sexually assaulted or harassed someone as a "Legal adult." He responded that he had not.
"Seventeen is not exactly a baby, either," Hirono said.
