Nearly 1 in 5 U. California freshmen are failing introductory math

Recent data reveals that almost one in five freshmen at the University of California (UC) are failing introductory math courses, prompting discussions around admissions tests.

• Approximately 18% of UC freshmen received a D or F or withdrew from math classes during the 2025-26 academic year.

• This failure rate has nearly doubled since the 2020-21 school year when standardized tests like the SAT and ACT were last required for admissions.

• The average GPA for students in these courses has dropped from 3.18 in 2020-21 to 2.7 in 2025-26.

• Failure rates in math courses vary across UC campuses, with UC Merced showing the highest at 36% and UC Santa Barbara the lowest at 8.2%.

• Over 3,000 California faculty members have signed letters advocating for the reinstatement of standardized testing to better assess student preparedness for college-level work.

• Concerns have been raised that many students are entering UC campuses unprepared for the rigor of higher education, with some professors indicating that basic math skills are lacking.

The significant rise in failure rates among UC freshmen in math classes has sparked calls to reevaluate admissions criteria to ensure students are adequately prepared for college academics.
