The U.S. Department of the Treasury has imposed sanctions on a financial network that was providing significant funds to the Hamas terrorist group. The network disguised its operations as humanitarian aid.
Sanctions Imposed: The Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sanctioned a member of Hamas’s military wing, Saleem Abdallah Saleem al-Zaq, along with two individuals from France who assisted in financing Hamas.
Fundraising Mechanism: The network allegedly funneled over $2 million to Hamas over several years through cryptocurrencies and fraudulent charities, promoting these efforts as humanitarian assistance on social media.
Consequences of Sanctions: All properties and interests of the sanctioned individuals in the U.S. are blocked, and U.S. persons are prohibited from transactions involving these individuals.
Legislative Support: U.S. lawmakers are pushing to dismantle the U.N. Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), claiming there are ties between its employees and Hamas. They argue that any aid organization must be free of these connections to prevent supporting terrorism.
Ongoing Disarmament Discussions: In July, an agreement for the disarmament of Hamas was announced, but the process has not begun yet.
These sanctions reflect the U.S. commitment to disrupting financial support for Hamas to prevent terrorist actions and maintain regional stability while ensuring that legitimate humanitarian aid reaches civilians in Gaza.
