FBI arrests Energy Department employee on charge of trying to support Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen

A Department of Energy electrical engineer, Ashton Hamed Ellaboudy, has been arrested for allegedly supporting the Iranian-backed Houthi rebels. The Justice Department announced the arrest, stating he was involved in activities harmful to U.S. interests.

Ellaboudy, 51, from Richland, Washington, was arrested and is set to appear in court.

He is accused of buying materials for homemade explosives and drones to aid the Houthis in Yemen.

The FBI states he aimed to improve the Houthis' communications and traveled to Yemen, where ongoing conflict has displaced many.

After returning to the U.S., Ellaboudy misled authorities about his travel purpose, claiming it was related to missile defense inspections.

Investigations revealed he communicated with informants and advised on communications equipment for the Houthis.

He faces charges for providing material support to a U.S.-designated terrorist organization.

The allegations against Ellaboudy highlight serious national security concerns regarding support for terrorist groups like the Houthis.
