When President Donald Trump took the stage at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center on August 21, the crowd of supporters for Senate hopeful Darline Graham got more than the usual rally fare. They got a highway.
“It’s all funded. It’s all ready to go,” Trump declared, referring to Interstate 73, the long stalled 80 mile, $2 billion corridor that would finally connect the Grand Strand to the national interstate system. The promise, four decades in the making and spanning seven presidential administrations, had suddenly materialized in a single sentence.
What Trump did not say and what the cheering crowd could not have known, is that the announcement was less an infrastructure milestone than the final stroke of a political transaction that had been quietly assembling for weeks. The I-73 promise was not merely a gift to South Carolina. It was the currency that bought Darline Graham a United States Senate seat.
