This clearance lasted from 2014 until 2021, overlapping with the COVID-19 pandemic. This information was revealed during a Senate hearing focused on Dr. Anthony Fauci's management of the pandemic.

1. Q Security Clearance: Gates held a "Q security clearance," one of the highest levels of security clearance in the U. S. government, allowing access to highly classified information, including details related to nuclear materials and sensitive scientific research.

2. Duration of Clearance: The clearance was confirmed to be active throughout the entirety of the COVID-19 pandemic and during Fauci's leadership at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID).
