The U.S. Army is investing in nuclear energy to enhance power reliability on military bases by developing transportable nuclear microreactors.
The Army has announced a program that will allocate up to $2.2 billion in contracts to five energy companies for building and operating these microreactors.
Locations for the reactors include military bases in North Carolina, Kentucky, Texas, Georgia, and New York.
This initiative arises from an executive order signed by President Trump, which mandates the establishment of the first Army-regulated reactor by September 2028.
The aim is to provide secure and independent power to military installations, minimizing reliance on civilian electrical grids, thus protecting against outages and cyber threats.
Each microreactor will generate less than 20 megawatts of electricity, sufficient for a small town or military base, and can be easily transported.
The reactors will adhere to safety standards similar to commercial plants but will be regulated by the Army instead of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
