General Mills has announced that all its cereals in the United States are now free from artificial colors, as part of a broader initiative to promote healthier food options. This move aligns with the “Make America Healthy Again” mission led by HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
General Mills has removed synthetic dyes from its entire U.S. cereals lineup, including popular brands like Trix and Lucky Charms.
The company committed to this change by summer 2026 to ensure K-12 school foods also meet this standard. They have already completed this for school food earlier this year.
As of now, 90% of General Mills' retail portfolio has been transitioned away from synthetic colors, with plans to include other products such as fruit snacks and baking items by the end of 2027.
The decision to eliminate synthetic dyes came after concerns from Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton regarding the marketing of these cereals as healthy for children despite containing harmful additives.
Alongside this change, General Mills plans to introduce over twice as many new products that cater to consumer nutrition preferences, emphasizing recognizable ingredients like protein and fiber.
The company’s announcement follows similar commitments from other brands, such as WK Kellogg Company, which plans to replace artificial colors in its cereals by 2026, and Mars, which has phased out petroleum dyes from M&Ms.
