Rep. James Clyburn (D-SC) expressed serious concerns about the current U.S. Supreme Court during an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” He believes the court is trying to revert to the discriminatory ideas from the 1857 Dred Scott v. Sandford case.
Clyburn stated that the Supreme Court's actions resemble former Chief Justice Roger Taney's opinion, which claimed that black individuals had no rights that white individuals needed to respect.
He is advocating for the expansion of the Supreme Court from nine justices to thirteen, aligning with calls from figures like former Vice President Kamala Harris.
Clyburn argues that significant changes in Congress are necessary to protect civil rights and uphold the Constitution, particularly regarding the interpretations of the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments.
He criticized Justice Clarence Thomas for straying from modern interpretations of the Constitution, suggesting that Thomas has moved from a liberal to a conservative stance.
Clyburn’s comments highlight his belief that the Supreme Court is reversing progress in civil rights and his support for expanding the court to better represent civil rights and constitutional values.
