STEVE MILLOY: Trump’s EPA Is Right To Be Skeptical Of ‘Sun-Blocking’

This week, Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin took action against a concerning proposal to block sunlight as a method to cool the planet.

• Make Sunsets, a South Dakota company, uses balloons to release sulfur dioxide particles into the stratosphere, claiming this would reflect sunlight and help counter global warming.

• They sell “Cooling Credits” for $1 each, asserting that one credit offsets one ton of carbon dioxide emissions, sending purchasers confirmation and video of the event.

• Zeldin expresses concerns regarding the pollution from sulfur dioxide, which can lead to acid rain, a serious problem that was aggravated by burning high-sulfur coal in the past.

• The Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 helped mitigate acid rain issues in the U. S.

• Though Make Sunsets is not at the scale of historic industrial pollution, launching air pollutants into the atmosphere requires regulation and monitoring.

• Geoengineering ideas, like altering sunlight for climate control, face skepticism from both advocates and critics of global warming.

• The potential unforeseen consequences of such geoengineering efforts, such as weaponization, raise significant ethical and safety concerns.

• While Make Sunsets is currently a minor player, more influential figures and organizations are exploring similar geoengineering methods, with significant funding already allocated by the Biden administration.

The need for careful consideration and regulation of geoengineering projects is urgent, especially as larger entities enter the field, potentially putting human life and the environment at risk.
