Dem States Now Boycotting Entire Countries

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker has initiated a boycott against El Salvador, expanding the trend started by California of boycotting conservative states. This action is related to a legal dispute involving a detainee named Kilmar Abrego Garcia.

• Pritzker has ordered state agencies to stop working with El Salvador.

• The Illinois State Board of Investment, the State Universities Retirement System, and the Teachers’ Retirement System have been asked to review their investments in relation to El Salvador.

• The governor's office also directed the Department of Central Management Services to identify contracts tied to El Salvador.

• The Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity will analyze the trade relationship between Illinois and El Salvador, focusing on imports and the role of Salvadoran goods in Illinois manufacturing.

• El Salvador’s primary exports to Illinois include coffee and knit t-shirts, but plans for the boycott of these products are unclear.

• The author criticizes Pritzker’s use of public resources for political aims, suggesting that such boycotts misuse state authority and threaten diplomatic relations.

• It is argued that state governments should not undermine foreign relations with national leaders.

The actions taken by Illinois reflect a growing trend of boycotting based on political disagreements. This approach raises concerns about the implications for foreign relations and the appropriate use of public funds in political conflicts. The author questions whether it is right for states to engage in such actions without legislative approval.
